Workshops Appropriate for Substance Abuse Issues Find your way back.
When I went back to college in 1992, I created and facilitated several workshops on the topics of anger control, repentance, stress and respect. I had the opportunity to offer them to a substance abuse recovery centre; a youth open custody centre, and an adult detention centre.
One of my most memorable incidents was at the substance abuse recovery centre for men where I was asked to sit with a new man for a while because the intake staff was busy. We talked for about an hour. I encouraged him to use this time and place to start his healing and express his darkest feelings. I encouraged him to experience the freedom in allowing himself to be supported for a while. After six weeks of learning, it was time for me to leave. All the men created and signed a beautiful going away card for me. This one particular man confessed on the card that I had saved his life; he had planned to commit suicide that night but our conversation gave him hope and he put just enough faith back in himself to continue. That not only acknowledged my part in his healing, but also cemented my desire to help as much as I can with as little judgment as possible.
I offer my insight of substance abuse that I learned the hard way from a man I loved deeply. His problem gave me profound insight into alcohol and drug abuse.
These workshops are designed to be quick, informative and experiential. They are usually offered in situations where there is little time and a smaller attention span of the participants due to their stress levels.
